Pantone's colour of the year 2020 . . .

At the end of November Pantone announced the colour of the year, as they have done for the past 20 years.

The Pantone Institute was established in the 1960’s to enable the standardisation of colours across different media, so a Pantone colour reference will be the same colour regardless of whether it is printed on fabric, paper, or even as a paint for your walls at home.

Pantone started creating a colour of the year in 2000. The chosen colour is influenced by a number of factors including; people’s lifestyles, socio-economic trends, ecological trends, travel destinations, new technology, social media and even up coming sporting events anything that has an impact on a global scale.

This year’s colour of the year is ‘Classic blue’ this has been inspired by the evening sky as night time falls, or the deepest blue of the sea. Blue is known to be a calming colour and with all of the political and economic changes happening in the world along with the start of a new decade calm and confidence is needed by everyone.

Pantone have stated of Classic Blue

‘Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.’

The colour of the year is closely followed by designers, marketers and creators and as the year progresses this colour will be seen in shops across the world and will influence interior design and fashion.

I love blue as a flower colour as it is unusual, there are very few true blue flowers but the ones there are are striking. Examples of true blue flowers are Allium Caeruleum, Allium are usually purple however this variety is unusually blue with a delicate flower, another brighter blue flower is the Himalyan Poppies Meconopsis, which is so delicate and unusual and I can’t leave out Cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) as these were part of my wedding bouquet.

I’m really looking forward creating arrangements containing blues, one of my 2020 brides had already decided to use blue as part of her wedding flowers before the colour of the year was announced and I can’t wait to create the flowers for her special day.
